Elementary Chinese Grammar II

Availability

This course is available open to all visiting students but only as a second semester course.

 

Course Content

This course will build on CHIN103 and will emphasize the acquisition of the most useful expressions and sentences about student’s family, friends and preferences as well as information about their hobby and everyday life. This course will add at least 200 Chinese words and related compounds to the repertoire acquired in CHIN103. Students will also be introduced to basic sentence structures of Mandarin Chinese. Students are expected to gain their knowledge of reading, especially some knowledge about Chinese grammar and characters. They will learn commonly used expressions and sentences about introducing themselves, hobbies and everyday lives. They will also learn some knowledge about organizing their expression in Chinese and sentences about introducing themselves, talking about family and friends. Students are expected to learn some basic knowledge of Chinese culture. They will gain some commonly used Chinese characters to enable basic reading and conversation.

 

Teaching

Wednesday, 5:30pm- 7:20pm for 12 weeks.

 

Presentation of the topics takes the form of a lecture and discussion on set topics. Students are required to read course materials before the class session it is assigned for. The Lecturer will not repeat the reading; usually, lectures will involve illustrating selected points by working through pieces of data. Students are expected to come prepared to discuss, with their questions that arise out of the reading.

 

Formative Coursework

Student’s general performance is assessed through class participation, group presentations, written assignment, class tests and final end-of Semester Examination.

Assessment and Grading

Evaluation will be based on a continued assessment which will constitute 30% and a final end of semester examination which will constitute 70%.
