We are very glad you have decided to contribute to the success of UG and it is our mandate to make your stay here a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Leaving home to study abroad requires some preparation, and certain matters must be taken care of even before you leave your country.
International students are at liberty to reside in any of the university’s residential facilities. Generally, international students live at the International Students Hostel with other Ghanaians in a 2:1 ratio. International graduate students may be housed in the Valco Trust Hostels depending on availability.

Accommodation for Married Graduate Students
Please note that the university does not provide family-type accommodation for married graduate students. If you wish to come with your spouse, partner and/or child we advise you come alone initially. Once you are settled you can look for off-campus accommodation so your spouse, partner and/or child can join you later. Note however, that off-campus housing is relatively expensive.
Ghana is warm all year round. Temperatures in Accra range from 25o to 33o C. Come along with summer-type clothes. Nights can sometimes be chilly, so a few light sweaters can also help. The major rainy season often occurs between June to August.
ECOWAS nationals: No visa required.
Non-ECOWAS nationals: A valid visa/entry permit required. Visit the Ghana High Commission in your country for application requirements and procedure.

You will need to regularize your stay once you arrive in Ghana.

Non-Citizen Ghana Card: US$ 120.00 or GHS equivalent
Renewal of Non-Citizen Ghana Card: US$60.00 or GHS equivalent
Penalty for Non-Renewal: ECOWAS – GHS 60.00/month; Non-ECOWAS- GHS 80.00/month
Resident Permit: US$60.00
Visa Extension: US$60.00
Single to Multiple Entry Visa: US$ 75.00 for 3 months

In Ghana, you will need a residence permit to stay for the duration of your studies. In addition, all internationals are required to have the Non-Citizen Ghana Card.
Non-Citizen Ghana Card Application Requirements:
- Introductory letter from IPO
- UG admission letter/Appointment letter (original and 2 photocopies)
- Proof of payment of fees
- Bank statement (not applicable to students)
- Travel passport
- Student/Staff ID
- 4 passport-sized photographs
Residence Permit Application/Renewal requirements:

Your health is one of your most important assets. You must take all measures to ensure a healthy condition of mind and body.
Ghana is EBOLA-FREE. Standard international screening practices are carried out at all entry points to ensure our citizens' and your safety.
Health care services are available to all students at our University Hospital and Students' Clinic.
Ghana is one of the safest places on earth. However, we advise that you take the security measures you would take at home here as well.
The UG campuses are generally safe, with campus security on patrol both day and night.
