Kiswahili Grammar and Translation II

Availability

This course is available open to all visiting students but only as a second semester course. It is advisable for students to take this course only after they have taken a year and a semester of Kiswahili courses.

 

Course Content

This course is a continuation of 201 and it is intended to give students a deeper understanding of Kiswahili grammar. This includes strengthening aspects of Kiswahili grammar already covered such as going further on to look at compound adjectives, special adjectives etc. It will also look at additional functional aspects of Kiswahili grammar such as functions of adverbs, use of auxiliary verbs and their grammatical relations between nouns and verbs in Kiswahili. Emphasis will be placed on improving students’ basic skills in translation. At this stage, students should be able to translate simple Kiswahili texts and documents with particular attention to basic Kiswahili grammatical rules learnt in class. The aim of this course is to introduce students to various aspects of Kiswahili grammar in order to strengthen their ability to construct and internalize complex constructions in the language. The course is also to equip students with intermediate skills in translating simple texts paying particular attention to topics covering various aspects of soccer, entertainment and business terms in Kiswahili.

 

Teaching

 

Thursday, 7:30 -9:20 am for 12 weeks

 

Teaching will be mainly interactive in order to increase students’ participation. They will be encouraged to attempt resolution of problems in various topics of discussion through:

1.                                           Home assignments

2.                                           regular in -class exercises

3.                                           Students will do group work (Translation)

 

Formative Coursework

 

At the end of the course, students should be able to make meaning grammatical sentences in Kiswahili. They are also expected to display confidence in their ability to express themselves on various topics. Students should be to explain basic translation strategies. The students should be able to apply such strategies in translating texts from and into Kiswahili.

Student’s general performance is assessed through class participation, group presentations, written assignment, class tests and final end-of Semester Examination.
